Paul Mogensen and Stephen Rosenthal
April 9 – May 17, 2009
March 19, 2009—New York: BLT Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of selected work by painters Paul Mogensen (b. 1935) and Stephen Rosenthal (b. 1941), on view from April 9 – May 10.
While Mogensen and Rosenthal were often lumped together with other Minimalist artists of the 1960s and ‘70s, the pairing of their work in this exhibition demonstrates a much broader and multifaceted approach to painting that continued throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. Mogensen’s large-scale canvases, saturated with expressive color and shaped with precise geometric cuts, create an unexpected dialogue with the smaller, subtler works by Rosenthal. Together, the visually distinct styles of both painters coalesce to allow the viewer an opportunity to experience a unique type of openness in contemporary painting.
The work of both artists has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe and can be found in several renowned public and private collections. They attended the MFA program at Yale University School of Art, with Rosenthal graduating in 1961 and Mogensen finishing a year later at the University of Southern California. Each artist currently lives and works in New York.
BLT Gallery inaugurated its space on the Bowery on January 15, 2009 with an exhibition of new work by Jan Frank. The gallery is dedicated to showing the work of established and mid-career artists and strives to eschew the trends set by auction houses and mega gallery conglomerates.
